The Sturlungs
Iceland's thirteenth century has been called the Age of the Sturlungs, because it is identified with fighting between the West Iceland Sturlungar clan and the Ásbirningar clan which ruled Skagafjörður. Many of the principal events of this Age occurred in the Skagafjörður region, such as the burning of the Flugumýri farmstead together with the Örlygsstaðir and Haugsnes battles, which led to heavy casualties. Hólar, Hegranesstaðir and Víðimýri are other examples of the Skagafjörður sites related to the Age of the Sturlungs.
Over the summer, guided trips take travellers to the major sites connected to the Sturlungs. You can find more information in the Varmahlíð Tourist Information Centre.
Keep in mind that the Sturlungar events which occurred in Skagafjörður were concentrated in the central part of the region, right where Hotel Varmahlíð is located.
